ISIA Roma Design, State Institute of Higher Education of the MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research), founded in Rome by Giulio Carlo Argan in 1973, arises from the need to train professionals in the wake of the great European, intellectual and pedagogical tradition, exemplified in the Bauhaus and in the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, from which it inherits and develops a methodological framework of excellence grafted onto the great Italian tradition of creativity and product innovation; the only European university to receive two “Compassi d’Oro” and nine “Targhe Giovani” ADI, a Medal and a Plaque from the President of the Republic, a postage stamp from the Italian Post Office, along with numerous other prizes of great national and international prestige.

ISIA Roma Design identifies in design the essential moment of the dialectic and interaction between the individual and society, demand and sustainability, expression and reflection, meaning Design as a configuration of excellence of all kinds of instrumental and ingenious production. Strengthened by forty years of activity, structurally based on research and experimentation, it can now count on a cultural heritage and scientific and educational experience almost unique in Italy, able to provide the student with the adequate means to identify the profound contemporary socio-economic and technological changes and translate them into acts of creation, qualifying the designer both as a bearer of a renewed material culture and as an interpreter of the immateriality of our age.

ISIA Roma Design has for some time now determined its role and cultural mission starting from the acknowledgment of the profound socio-cultural and technological mutation of the human settlement of post-industrial society which, in fact, shifting the focus from the discourse on needs and functions, aims, in a systemic and relational sense, to update the geography of design in progress. The goal is to provide the student with the adequate means to identify profound changes and translate them into acts of creation, qualifying the designer both as a bearer of renewed material culture and as an interpreter of the immateriality of our age. A person predisposed to listening to complexity, aimed at creating innovation that signals to the world the exact cultural gap to be recovered between the catalog of goods and human doing. ISIA Roma Design has metabolized these transformations in not recent times without selling off the heritage acquired over the course of its history, but rather regenerating and enhancing it.

This attitude of cultural and methodological openness has made it possible to attribute new meanings to teaching, research and the training process more generally, bringing out a new paradigm of the project that has seen, everywhere in the world, the Design system not only talking about other, but also look elsewhere. The awareness, and the need, of a systemic-relational vision of the project has placed the school in the intellectual condition to make research evolve, anchored to the historical vision and mission of design, trying to explore new proposals on the topic of quality of life, of the new settlement systems, of sustainability and of the new needs of the person and of the community, with a constant aptitude for experimentation.

We have given the name of Systems Design to this constellation of thoughts, highlighting the systemic approach to making a product and favoring a listening oriented to the function of the signs, bearers of difference, rather than to the signs of function, now a consolidated presence in our methodological practice. ISIA Roma Design deals with the environment and environments, sustainability and globalization, the body and the person, mobility and telematics, part of the strategic project for human settlement, the Design of Hospitality, of which ethical design is an important segment, looking for a possible coexistence in a society perceived, irreversibly, as computerized, multi-ethnic, multi-technical and multicultural.
